Big Decisions Don't Come from PowerPoint Presentations

PowerPoint is a tool for structure, not for trust.
PowerPoint is a tool for structure, not for trust.

People don’t reach for a slide deck when the stakes are high. They reach for a conversation. Think about the last time someone told you they were considering leaving your organization. You didn’t open PowerPoint to convince them to stay. When you joined a new organization or recruited someone, the slide deck wasn’t the deciding factor, either.

The Serious Moments in Life

The same holds true in the most serious moments of life. When my father recently faced cancer surgery, the surgeon didn’t rely on a PowerPoint presentation. Neither did the veterinarian when my beagle was diagnosed with diabetes. In business, when legal issues are at hand, no one pulls out a projector. The pattern is consistent: when decisions matter, people talk.

Why PowerPoint Falls Short

PowerPoint is a tool for structure, not for trust. It organizes information, but it strips away tone, nuance, and the give‑and‑take that real decisions require. High‑risk choices involve emotion, uncertainty, and personal judgment. A slide deck cannot carry that weight.

Technical professionals and business leaders often forget this and default to presentations because they feel safe. But safety is not the same as effectiveness.

Clarity and Human Connection

People decide based on clarity and connection. They want to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and hear a direct explanation. They want to understand the “why,” not just the “what.”
